Hedonism Wines
MAYFAIR, LONDON
Hedonism Wines; a fresh concept in fine wine retailing situated in Mayfair, an area of London renowned for its luxury and exclusivity, demonstrating the boutique’s devotion to happiness and pleasure. With this in mind, establishing a captivating design from the exterior was the principal objective; this was then to be replicated throughout the interior. Lighting design practice Speirs + Major accepted the challenge of constructing a lighting scheme that would not only enhance the store’s character and identity after dark, but also ensure the strict environmental conditions were maintained.
Hiroto Toyoda worked on the project for Speirs + Major, he comments; “For me personally, it was a fascinating experience to enter the world of fine wines and to learn about how much precision, care and effort is required to preserve the bottles at the optimum condition. It was clear that lighting was going to be critical to the success of the project, not only to fulfil the functional and aesthetic requirements but also to make sure that the heat produced by the luminaires was kept to minimum and away from the merchandise.”
Developing a lighting scheme for an environment with the condition to sustain an ambient temperature of strictly 16°C on the lower ground floor and 17°C on the ground floor was central to the success of the project. These temperatures are mandatory to preserve merchandise; to attain this it was established from the beginning that the project would need to be 100% LED.
Architainment were called upon by Speirs + Major to illuminate the brick work positioned behind the display units. EcoSense Linear HP INT Wall Wash fixtures were utilised as an ultra-bright interior white light fixture; brighter than fluorescent tubes and flicker-free offer an earth-friendly, mercury-free cove solution. The robust, aluminium frame fixture features powerful energy efficient LEDs and precision constant-current circuit for long-life applications; which proved most suitable for this project.
