New LED Lighting At Derby Cathedral

Derby Cathedral dates from the 14th century and is the seat of the Bishop of Derby.

During the summer of 2015, with the help of government and local funding, this majestic place of worship underwent a significant refurbishment, including an upgrade of the lighting.

Lighting designer James Morse was commissioned to design the new lighting scheme, and specified the 2700K VarioLED Hydra LD25 from LED Linear to illuminate a number of areas.

At ground floor level, twelve fittings up light each of the window arches.

At high level, fifty four fittings are mounted on the columns, and up light the vaulted ceiling – showing off the impressive ceiling architecture.

In the chapel area, six fittings mounted at height, provide up lighting for the stained glass windows.

Hydra LD25 is a flexible, 2890 lumens per meter LED tape that can be integrated into a variety of profiles.

For Derby Cathedral, Architainment’s Technical Services fitted the tape into custom length VarioContour 006 profiles fitted with 60 degree frosted lenses.

The new LED light fittings from Architainment deliver multiple benefits to the Cathedral. Their high energy efficiency will save on power cost, and their higher reliability will mean significantly less maintenance and repair costs.

The Derby Cathedral project was on the shortlist at the 2016 Lighting Design Awards for Heritage Project of The Year
