The world famous wax figure attraction Madame Tussauds, rounded off 2010 by unveiling eight figures of global pop star Lady Gaga throughout its sites worldwide, in what it describes as the most ambitious figure launch in its history. Working towards unveiling the London wax figure of Gaga, Madame Tussauds called on LED supplier, Architainment Lighting Ltd, to illuminate the much anticipated figure.

Philips Selecon PL1

Once Madame Tussauds had completed the design, construction and style of its Lady Gaga figure, it was imperative that the lighting selected for the wax figure, and the Music Zone set in which it resides, was superior. After assessing the functionality required to light the figure, Architainment supplied Philips Selecon PL1 RHC03 Black PL1 Spot to Madame Tussauds, marking the first ever UK sale of this flagship fitting from the Philips entertainment group of products. The Selecon PL1 can be managed by an infrared remote control and is the first light source that delivers full control of the beam colour composition regardless of intensity. It uses a fully tunable high output LED light engine to support colour temperatures from 3000K to 5600K, plus full RGB colour mixing.

Working in collaboration with Madame Tussauds’ Show Services Manager, Simon Morris, Architainment suggested the Selecon PL1 as it has been designed to illuminate the world’s museums, art galleries and stages while significantly reducing the impact on the environment. The fitting maintains a high CRI down to very low light levels (>50 Lux) as the integral dimmer (0 to 100%) reduces intensity with minimal colour shift, maintaining the selected colour balance.

Explaining the reason for specifying the Selecon PL1, Architainment Sales Director, Paul Rees commented: “Although initially used to light the Gaga waxwork, the site wanted fixtures with flexibility that could be used on additional waxworks or moved to alternative sets throughout the entertainment venue. Therefore, a fitting that could both integrate with the original lighting on set and add a fresh and dynamic effect of its own was essential.” The PL1 makes matching existing light sources simpler with a quick selection of colour presets ranging from warm white, cool white and daylight. In addition, maximum energy consumption can be determined using power presets ranging from 30 watts to full power.

Commenting on the installation, Madame Tussauds PR Manager, Liz Edwards, said:

“The lights supplied by Architainment Lighting really helped us add drama to our Lady Gaga launch, allowing us to really highlight the figures features and create a huge impact to the media and is now something we will use on all our launches going forward.”
