Project Description

Meadows Shopping Centre
Chelmsford City

The Meadows Shopping Centre lies in the heart of Chelmsford City Centre between the rivers Can and Chelmer, and offers a unique shopping experience where popular national brands such as Fat Face, Warehouse, BHS and Giraffe sit alongside bespoke independent retailers giving visitors great choice and variety.

As part of a refurbishment programme, the three original stone entrances have been replaced by striking, contemporary glazed facades, whilst both the primary and feature lighting has been upgraded with dimmable LED lighting.

Award winning lighting designers Studio Fractal were commissioned to design the new lighting, and worked with Architainment Lighting Ltd and Birchalls Electrical Ltd to deliver the final solution.

Chris Campbell, Key Account Manager for Controls at Architainment comments “With three geographically separate electrical plant rooms, and the need to control pendant lights, down lights, cove lights, external signage and a colour feature wall – a networked Philips Dynalite solution using 0-10v dimming was chosen since it provides distributed intelligence and centralised control from the operations room”

With over two hundred metres of coving to illuminate across the centre, it was imperative to choose a solution that was not only energy efficient, but reliable due to it’s limited accessibility. LED Linear VarioLED Hydra LD25 was installed in the coving, whilst VarioLED Hydra HD10 was selected for the edge of the dropped ceiling in the double height atriums due to its higher light output.

To visually enhance the new full height glass facades, each entrance features the new illuminated Meadows logo, whilst VarioLED Flex Venus IP67 has been embedded into the external stonework to frame each entrance. In addition, the High Street entrance has a Color Fuse Powercore from Philips Color Kinetics that washes the upper section of the entrance with dynamic colour.

The new lighting solution now has a variety of timed lighting themes, automatic regulation of internal lighting, and a custom Meadows branded touch screen that the Centre Management team can use for both regular use and special occasions.

“We’re delighted with the results of the refurbishment and the positive difference it’s made to the centre. Both the centre entrances and the internal lighting have significantly improved the overall appearance of the centre and have received lots of positive comments from our shoppers.” says Sue Patel, Centre Manager at the Meadows Shopping Centre.

Chris Sutherland, Design Director of Studio Fractal comments “The design developed to provide an all LED lighting scheme consisting of a crisp cool wash of light across the new vaulted mall ceilings which was supported by regularly spaced small down lights. The lighting to the large atrium spaces included linear wall washing to the sides of the spaces (above the retail units) to help create a ‘feel’ of brightness across the walls and onto the timber ceiling. Within the centre of the atrium spaces were positioned an array of evenly spaced bespoke rectangular pendants, complete with a matt black and orange finish. The High Street double height entrance has a dual row of different height pendants located in front of the colour change feature wall, which in turn is celebrated by the linear ‘goalpost’ of light around the entrance portal – all located to gain maximum impact from the passing shoppers & pedestrians. The excellent and varied LED products and control range offered by Architainment helped us to deliver a visually high impact and low energy lighting solution for this retail refurbishment project “
