Project Description

One Angel Square (Co-op)
MANCHESTER

In 2009 Co-op commissioned a new 400,000 sq. ft, 16-storey head office in Manchester to present a contemporary environment that would permit greater freedom for adaptable working by its employees. The Co-op’s aspiration to help transform Manchester into a 21st Century leader in sustainable development helped guide this development. The group specified high sustainability for the innovative headquarters utilising an energy strategy as the solution to reducing the structure’s environmental footprint.

Buro Happold were called upon to deliver the scheme which has been more than achieved, with the building attaining the highest interim score for a commercial office building under the BREEAM accreditation scheme.

Architainment Lighting supplied Philips Color Kinetics ColorGraze, (now equivalent ColorGraze QLX Powercore) PCK ColorBlast Powercore and a custom white ColorBlast that was populated with white LEDs especially for the project. The stunning atrium roof feature is illuminated using the colour changing fixtures providing a dynamic visual lighting impression that has enhanced the overall building scheme.

All luminaires are connected to daylight sensors dimming the lighting when adequate daylight is available and changes to the colour temperature are harnessed throughout the day to improve the lower levels of the atrium. The lighting in the atrium operates in uniform with the existing daylight received within the space that only triggers when essential. It is these factors that help establish the structure as a new benchmark for commercial office design.
