Ysgol Y Gogarth is a specialist residential and day school in Llandudno, Wales catering for approximately one hundred and ninety five students that are aged between three and nineteen.

The students have a wide range of learning needs and are either fully statemented or in the process of being statemented. The school has recently been the subject of a major redevelopment, and Wilmot Dixon were awarded the £18 million contract.

The re-developed school offers a variety of specialist facilities, including a light room, hydrotherapy pool, ICT suite and quiet room. The school also provides sensory and autism classes, exceptional outdoor pursuits facilities, vocational areas and outdoor learning environments.

Interactive lighting

Cantoo Designs are a specialist design company that collaborate with other specialists to design inspiring spaces, and were asked to develop an interactive lighting scheme that used immersive technology that would cater for Ysgol Y Gogarth pupils. The solution needed to provide a wide range of students – especially their Autism Spectrum Disorder students – with numerous immersive experiences that could be easily accessed and controlled by the staff.

Cantoo partnered with lighting specialist Architainment Lighting Ltd, who in turn specified interactive lighting using Sensacell modules to create an interactive LED touch wall.

Each Sensacell module has an embedded effects engine that is able to deliver interactive video and lighting effects on a stand-alone basis, and without the need of an external control system.

Using a set of simple procedures and rules, the interactive lighting system creates interactive experiences that act on a range of, colour palettes, video and visual source elements.

Sensors control how these visual sources are mixed, modified and displayed in real time, creating a variety of dynamic, interactive visual experiences.

The practical value of being the teacher being able to focus on the actual experience as opposed to managing the curiosity of their Autism Spectrum Disorder students was the most important factor when Cantoo developed the design.
