The existing church lighting at St Paul’s Church in Haywards Heath had been in service for more than 50 years and needed updating.
With this in mind, the Parish contacted Andrew Harper of Lighting Design & Drawing Services to carry out a lighting survey, and to suggest the best solution for new church lighting.
Using his extensive lighting knowledge and referring to the latest ‘Guide on the lighting of Places of Worship’, Andrew carried out a comprehensive survey of the church and the needs of modern liturgies. Given an aging population it was decided that this was at best a minimum requirement.
In designing the new church lighting solution, a number of factors had to be taken into account, including varying lighting requirements in differing parts of the church, at various times of year and for varying liturgies, together with glare and uniformity of lighting. The lighting design also had to meet with the requirements of the latest building regulations. These stipulate that the lighting system must achieve an efficiency of greater 60 lumens per watt.
To up light the ceiling throughout the Church, Philips Color Kinetics eW Fuse Powercore 3000k medium beam luminaires were specified. These were mounted just above the frieze and directed towards the opposite side of the vaulted ceiling, and provide an average illumination level of 65 lux on the working plane. eW Fuse Powercore is an ideal choice for environmentally conscious applications, and its ultra compact form factor allows it to be installed in tight spaces.
A combination of track mounted Philips StyleID Performance 3000K and Mini 3000K have been used to provide down lighting in areas across the Church, including the Chancel, Side Chapels, Transepts and Nave. Recessed Philips LuxSpace down lighters fitted with a diffusing lens have been used in the Lobby, Nave and under the balcony.
It was decided that the Sanctuary wall needed to stand out and be more of a feature. To achieve this, an RGB colour changing solution from Philips Color Kinetics was specified and installed. The iColor Cove MX Powercore is a high intensity LED fixture that provides vibrant coloured light, and was the ideal choice for this element of the church lighting project.
Control of the Sanctuary coloured lighting system is by means of a ToBeTouched colour wheel, which allows the Church to select the colour required.
Andrew Harper comments “I feel very privileged to have been asked to undertake the lighting of this beautiful Church. It involved careful design to provide the lighting results required, whilst minimising glare and the visual appearance of the luminaires. The local installation contractors, C J Rumsey Electrical, made a very professional job of the installation of the lighting and central battery emergency lighting system, and it is pleasing to know that the result has met with full approval from the Church.”
Father Martin Jakubas, Parish Priest of St Paul’s comments “Our new lighting scheme had exceeded our expectations. The move from a small number of aging suspended chandeliers to modern, well positioned equipment has enabled us to take full advantage of the various lighting scenarios which we wished to develop. An unexpected benefit has been that removing the chandeliers has completely changed the visual and sound dynamics of the church solving some problems that we didn’t even know we had. We are very, very pleased with the work that Andrew and the installation team have done for us. It is attracting a lot of attention from other churches in the diocese of Arundel and Brighton.”
